Plot summary
Marcus Monserrat practices medical hypnosis and is getting on in years. With Estelle, his wife, he shares a house and a project: a machine of his own design that works through hypnosis, letting its operator take charge of a stranger's body and share whatever that stranger senses. The two of them pick Mike Roscoe, a young man, and Marcus brings him home with the promise of something he has not tried before. The experiment succeeds, and the couple can both steer Mike and feel what he feels. Marcus talks of publishing his results. Estelle, who has years to make up for, wants to keep going, and she persuades a hesitant Marcus. A fur jacket in a store window catches her eye, and she asks Marcus to have Mike take it.

- The screenplay by novelist John Burke was heavily re-written by director Michael Reeves and his childhood friend Tom Baker, including the ending, at Boris Karloff's insistence: Karloff wanted his character to appear more sympathetic.
- John Burke was removed from the main screenwriting credit and relegated to an 'idea by' credit, and his original script was posthumously published in 2013, with an introduction by Matthew Sweet and extra material from Kim Newman.
- The film's psychedelic effect, with the victim's face disintegrating into blobs of color, was created by teenage Joe Gannon, the first lightshow artist to work with Pink Floyd.
