Rupert Davies
Biography
Rupert Davies was a British actor who became best known for the title part in the BBC's 1960s television version of Georges Simenon's Maigret. Born in Liverpool, he resumed his acting career soon after his release as a prisoner of war, starring in the show Back Home at the Stoll Theatre in London, and in 1959 he played the Colonel in Alun Owen's The Rough and Ready Lot on stage and then on television. A familiar face in British television drama, he appeared in Quatermass II, Ivanhoe, Danger Man, Man in a Suitcase and The Champions, in Doctor at Large (1971), War and Peace (1972) and Arthur of the Britons, and he voiced Professor Ian Mac McClaine in Joe 90. Later films included the horror pictures Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968) and Witchfinder General (1968), plus Waterloo (1970) and Zeppelin (1971).
