Plot summary
England, 1795. Catherine arrives at the country estate of her fiancé, Charles Fengriffen, to be married, and takes an interest in the family portraits, above all that of Charles's grandfather, Henry Fengriffen. A severed hand reaches out of the painting and attacks her. After the wedding, an evil spirit comes to her room. She also sees visions of an undead corpse with a birthmarked face and empty eye sockets. When the physician Dr Whittle announces that she is pregnant, he presses Charles to tell her the estate's dark past; Charles dismisses it as legend and calls in a London psychiatrist, Dr Pope, to treat her mind.
