Arthur Treacher
Biography
Arthur Treacher was an English actor of stage and film whose career ran from the 1920s into the 1960s. Born in Brighton, he established himself in England before traveling to New York City in 1926 with the musical comedy revue Great Temptations. He began his movie work in 1929 and from 1933 was based in Hollywood, freelancing across studios and often cast as upper-class Englishmen. A butler part in Fashions of 1934 fixed him in servant roles, and he played Jeeves, the valet from P. G. Wodehouse, in Thank You, Jeeves! (1936), returning to the role in Step Lively, Jeeves! (1937). He appeared in four Shirley Temple pictures, among them Curly Top (1935), Heidi (1937), and The Little Princess (1939). In the 1960s he gained wider notice in America through his television work with Merv Griffin, serving as announcer and sidekick on Griffin's talk show, and as Constable Jones in Disney's Mary Poppins (1964). He died in 1975.

A role that slipped away
Treacher played Jeeves, the valet created by P. G. Wodehouse, in Thank You, Jeeves! (1936) and Step Lively, Jeeves! (1937). Wodehouse disliked how his work was adapted and would not authorize more Jeeves movies.
Getting ready for a role
Treacher's movie scenes with Shirley Temple were deliberately scripted so the 6' 4" actor stood or danced beside the tiny child star, as when they sang and danced together in The Little Princess.
A change of course
In 1950, Treacher was a disc jockey on a WNBC Radio program in New York City. On that show, he played Gilbert and Sullivan recordings and offered his comments on them.
