Biography

Ian Abercrombie was an English actor who started out as a dancer, winning bronze, silver and gold medals for stage dancing and playing dates in London as well as Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands before moving to the United States at seventeen. Born in Grays, Essex, he made his first American stage appearance in 1951, opposite Jason Robards in Stalag 17. Summer stock, regional and off-Broadway plays followed, and awards came for roles in productions such as A Doll's House. Cult film fans knew him as Wiseman in Army of Darkness (1992). On television he played Elaine's boss in the sixth season of Seinfeld, Alfred Pennyworth on Birds of Prey and Professor Crumbs on Wizards of Waverly Place, and he voiced Palpatine in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) and Ambrose in Rango (2011). He died in 2012.
