Alan Caillou
Biography
Alan Caillou was an English-born actor, screenwriter and author who also served as a soldier, policeman and professional hunter. He was born in Surrey, England, and worked for the Palestine Police before studying acting. During World War II he served in the Intelligence Corps and was awarded the Military Cross. After the war he served as a police commissioner in Italian Somaliland and later worked as a hunter before moving to Canada, where he began acting on Canadian television. His films included Five Weeks in a Balloon (1962), Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion (1965), The Rare Breed (1966), Hellfighters (1968), Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977), Beyond Evil (1980) and The Ice Pirates (1984). He had a recurring role in the Tarzan TV series and appeared in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1972). He wrote 52 paperback thrillers and many magazine stories, and several of his novels were filmed, including Rampage in 1963.

Alan Caillou's language skills led to a transfer into the Intelligence Corps. While serving in the Western Desert, he adopted the surname Caillou, the French word for pebble, as an alias.
A change of course
Caillou served in the Palestine Police between 1936 and 1939, before World War II, and it was during that time that he picked up the Arabic language.

In 1955 Caillou wrote Rogue's Gambit, his first novel. For it he used the name Caillou, which had been one of his aliases during the war.
