Plot summary
In 1907 London, Sir Anthony Ross, a widowed aristocrat and millionaire, mounts an expedition to the Arctic. His son Donald disappeared on a whaling voyage while searching for the island where whales are said to go to die. Sir Anthony takes on Professor John Ivarsson, a Scandinavian-American archaeologist, and Captain Brieux, a French inventor and aeronaut whose dirigible Hyperion is to carry the party north. In the Arctic the men meet Oomiak, an Inuk friend of Donald's, and draw him into the search. The goal is an uncharted island where a Norse community has lived hidden for centuries, and its people keep their existence secret from the outside world.

- Disney planned a Disneyland attraction called Discovery Bay, with the nose of a life-size Hyperion replica protruding from a wooden hangar, but it was never built, though planning models and sketches survive.
