Plot summary
Harry Caulder is a harbor patrolman who swims to work from his home on the sand at Venice Beach. One morning he greets his neighbor Ruth and her dog Piper before entering the water. From the sea he hears Ruth scream; when he looks, she has vanished beneath the sand. He reports the disappearance to Sgt. Royko and Lt. Piantadosi. Ruth's daughter Catherine travels from San Francisco to stay in her mother's house while the search goes on.
