Edith Evanson
Biography
Edith Evanson was an American character actress who worked steadily in film, television and the theater. Born in 1896 in Washington state, she was a court reporter before her first screen role, uncredited, in The Man Who Wouldn't Talk (1940). During the 1940s she specialized in supporting parts, frequently as maids, landladies, busybodies or middle-aged secretaries, and appeared in Citizen Kane (1941), Woman of the Year (1942), Reunion in France (1942), I Remember Mama (1948), Rope (1948), The Damned Don't Cry (1950) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Television work followed from the late 1940s, on series including Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Lassie, and she acted on Los Angeles stages, where the Los Angeles Times called her performance in Harvest of Years poignant in 1946. She died in 1980.
