Biography

Celeste Holm was an American actress who began on the stage in the late 1930s after studying drama at the University of Chicago, having grown up in Manhattan. Her first professional stage role came in Hamlet, in which Leslie Howard starred, and she moved on to Broadway for Gloriana (1938) and The Time of Your Life (1940). She drew her greatest notice as Ado Annie in the premiere of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! in 1943. Signed by 20th Century Fox in 1946, she won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and was nominated for Come to the Stable (1949) and All About Eve (1950). Preferring live theater, she took only select film roles, among them The Tender Trap (1955) and High Society (1956), and worked often in television, including Cinderella (1965). She died in 2012.
