Plot summary
Rose Sandigate lives in Bethnal Green with her husband George, his two teenage daughters and her young son. Rationing is still in force. A newspaper report tells her that Tommy Swann, to whom she was engaged years earlier, has escaped from Dartmoor, where he had been serving time for robbery with violence. She discovers him in the family's air-raid shelter, and he asks her to keep him hidden until nightfall. When the others leave the house, she takes him in, feeds him and locks him into the bedroom she shares with George. He needs money to get out of the country, and she has little beyond the housekeeping.
