Plot summary
When money problems force Boston widow Margaret Carey to give up the family home, her eldest daughter Nancy remembers a yellow house the Careys once admired in Beulah, Maine, and asks about it. After the family sells its piano, they move to the country. The house stands neglected, and Osh Popham, the town's postmaster and the caretaker, offers cheap labor and goods from his store to make it livable, over the objections of his wife Mariah. The owner is away in Europe, and Osh says he will not mind the Careys living there. He trades young Peter overalls in exchange for the city suit the boy has outgrown, and throws in money for a haircut and lessons in carpentry. Then word comes that orphaned cousin Julia needs a home.

- Walt Disney initially disliked "The Ugly Bug Ball", but songwriter Robert Sherman convinced him by arguing that to bugs, other bugs are not ugly even if they look ugly to us. The song, sung by Burl Ives, went on to become one of the popular songs of the year.
