Plot summary
Sharon Ferris lives in Tampa with her daughter Nikki and has been divorced for two years. A job promotion will take them to New York City at the end of the summer, and Nikki dreads the move and the all-girls school waiting for her in the fall. In summer school she becomes friends with Mary Grand, whose father Bill, a sports writer, has been widowed for four years. The girls decide that a romance between Sharon and Bill would keep Nikki in Tampa and make both parents happy, and they begin scheming to bring the two together. When their first efforts come to nothing, Nikki turns to Sharon's identical twin sister, Susan Carey, who lives in California.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Parent Trap II (1986)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The characters Nikki Ferris and Mary Grand were named after roles Hayley Mills had played in the earlier Disney films The Moon-Spinners and In Search of the Castaways, a deliberate homage chosen by director Ronald F. Maxwell.
- The minor characters Walter and Lillian Elias were named after Walt Disney and his wife, since Disney's full name was Walter Elias Disney and his wife was named Lillian.
- Hayley Mills told the Chicago Sun-Times that she hesitated before saying yes, partly because the original was her favorite film and partly because it had taken her so long to break away from her Disney image, which she called a real impediment to getting the roles she wanted.
- In the original draft of the script Sharon was going to have a son rather than a daughter, and the character became the girl Nikki only when rewrites of the script were ordered.
