Plot summary
In a secluded country house, Mrs. St. Maugham is raising her granddaughter Laurel, a disturbed teenager who has seen off every governess engaged for her and who talks of burning the house. The new applicant, Miss Madrigal, has no references and has never held the position, but she knows about gardens, and the chalk that fills the garden soil has defeated Mrs. St. Maugham. Laurel notices that her governess's clothes are new, that her room holds no photographs, and that Miss Madrigal refuses to say anything about her past, so she sets out to find what the woman is hiding. Maitland, the butler, befriends the governess and warns her to lock her door. Laurel hates her mother, Olivia, who ran off and is estranged from Mrs. St. Maugham.
