Norman Bird
Biography
Norman Bird was an English character actor and a RADA graduate who made his West End debut in Peter Brook's production of The Winter's Tale at the Phoenix Theatre in 1951, and he was later a member of the BBC's Radio Drama Company. He first appeared on screen as a foreman in An Inspector Calls (1954) and became a familiar face in British cinema of the 1950s and 1960s, with roles in nearly 50 films, among them The League of Gentlemen (1960), The Angry Silence (1960), Victim (1961), Whistle Down the Wind (1961) and The Hill (1965). On television he amassed more than 200 appearances, including Mr Braithwaite in Worzel Gummidge from 1979 to 1981 and a part in the Fawlty Towers episode Waldorf Salad. One of his last film roles was a taxi driver in Richard Attenborough's Shadowlands (1993). He died in 2005.
