Plot summary
Fackham Hall has passed down the Davenport family for generations, and the patriarch, Lord Humphrey Davenport, has no son left to inherit it. To keep the estate in the family, his daughter Poppy is promised to her cousin Archibald. Into this arrives Eric Noone, an orphan and a thief, carrying a message for Lord Davenport. The household mistakes him for a candidate for the hall boy post, and he takes the job, letting the letter slip his mind. At the wedding, the vicar's sermons suffer from badly placed punctuation. Poppy runs out of the church and declares her love for Lionel, a salesman of manure. Lady Davenport turns to her other daughter, Rose, whom Archibald's chauvinism repels; Rose prefers Eric.
