Paul Hurst
Biography
Paul Hurst was an American actor and film director, born in Traver, California, who died in 1953. In 1933 he acted at the Beverly Hills Little Theatre for Professionals in the play Eve the Fifth. He was remembered above all for two screen parts: the Yankee deserter shot by Scarlett after he trespasses at Tara in Gone with the Wind (1939), and Smith, the drunken vigilante, in The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). The role he was proudest of was a crotchety rancher in Angel and the Badman who refuses a Quaker family water until John Wayne's character persuades him to share it. After that part, Republic Pictures hired him to play Monte Hale's comic sidekick in a series of Westerns. John Ford's The Sun Shines Bright (1953) was his last film.
