Plot summary
Gunther Wyckoff escapes from a mental institution and arrives by bus in Terminal City, looking for Dr. John Faron, the psychiatrist whose testimony put him in the asylum. He checks Faron's office and his apartment without finding him. Across the street from Faron's building stands the Oasis Bar, and Wyckoff decides it is a good place from which to watch the entrance. The bar is run by Chuckles, with Skip assisting, and among the people inside are the barfly Freddy, Helen, her older companion Earl, and reporter Harrison D. Barnes. Wyckoff takes the bar over and telephones the police with a demand: bring Faron to him within twenty-five minutes, or the people inside will pay.
