Plot summary
Robert Leslie is a Vietnam veteran who journeys into the remote country of a fallen comrade to hand the man's belongings to his father, a chief and shaman of the First Nations. He decides to remain a while in the hope of finding himself. He comes across three orphaned bear cubs and begins to raise them, meaning to teach them to live on their own. The people of the region face eviction: the federal government wants to put facilities in the section of the national park where they live. Bob appeals to the park board for them, but his ignorance of Native history brings him into conflict with his friend's people.
