George MacKay
Biography
George MacKay is an English actor who started out as a child actor after an acting scout spotted him at school, making his professional debut as one of the Lost Boys in Peter Pan (2003). Roles in The Thief Lord (2006), Defiance (2008) and The Boys Are Back (2009) followed before he took leads in Private Peaceful (2012), How I Live Now (2013) and the musical Sunshine on Leith (2013). He won a BAFTA Scotland Award for For Those in Peril and gained wider recognition as a young soldier in Sam Mendes's 1917 (2019). Other credits include Captain Fantastic (2016), True History of the Kelly Gang (2019), Wolf (2021), Munich: The Edge of War (2021) and Femme (2023), which brought him a British Independent Film Award for Best Joint Lead Performance. On stage he has appeared in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker at The Old Vic.

First role
In 2002, an acting scout noticed MacKay at school and invited him to try out for a role in P. J. Hogan's film version of Peter Pan. He went to a workshop, landed the part of the Lost Boy Curly, and it became his first professional acting job.
Early training
At 17, MacKay auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and was turned down by both.
Behind the award
MacKay shared the British Independent Film Award for Best Joint Lead Performance for Femme in 2023, a joint win rather than a solo prize.
