Plot summary
A Cornish fishing village has been in decline since the Rose of Nevada and her crew were lost at sea thirty years before, a loss the community never recovered from. Now the vessel is back in the harbor. Mike, a former businessman who once owned her, decides to crew her again. Nick, a husband and father struggling to pay for a collapsed roof, joins, and so does Liam, a wandering laborer who sleeps near the docks. Murgey, an experienced sailor, is to lead them. As Nick sets out, his senile neighbor Mrs. Richards takes him for her son Luke, one of the fishermen on the boat, and warns him not to let the crew dwindle.
