Plot summary
Jacob is a teenager with clinical lycanthropy, convinced he is a wolf. After an attack on his brother, his family commits him to a mental asylum whose head, called the Zookeeper by the residents, runs a program to make them human. The other patients identify as animals too: Rufus says he is a German Shepherd, and others name a parrot, a duck and a squirrel. Rufus tells Jacob that as canines they are pack animals and that everyone must obey the staff. The patients watch videos of ordinary human behavior and are taken outside on leashes, where Jeremy, who says he is a squirrel, is ordered to climb a tree and is hurt. The Zookeeper orders Jacob to attack him, and Jacob refuses. At night he keeps company with Cecile, a patient nicknamed Wildcat.
