Plot summary
Bodevan, Kielyr, Vespyr, Rellian, Zaja and Nai have grown up off the grid on ten acres in the mountains of Washington, raised by their parents, Ben and Leslie Cash. The children train physically, learn to hunt and forage, and read college-level books at home; none has an official academic record. Leslie, once a lawyer, lives with bipolar disorder and is in a hospital in New Mexico, close to her wealthy parents, so Ben raises the children alone. She dies there. Her father, Jack Bertrang, arranges a Christian burial, though Leslie followed Buddhist philosophy and asked to be cremated. Jack orders Ben to stay away from the service and threatens to have him arrested. Ben first resolves to remain home, then changes his mind, and the family sets out for New Mexico in an old school bus.
