Plot summary

In 1932, Hugh Legat and Paul von Hartmann graduate together from Oxford. Six years later, Legat is seconded from the British Foreign Office as Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's private secretary, while Hartmann is a translator at the German foreign ministry in Berlin. Chamberlain seeks peace with Hitler, even at the cost of letting Germany take the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia, and Hitler agrees to a conference in Munich. Hartmann is secretly plotting with a Wehrmacht general against Hitler, and receives a stolen document showing Hitler's plans to conquer Europe. He and his allies decide to put it in Chamberlain's hands in Munich, and Hartmann names Legat as a man who can help. In London, MI6 officers approach Legat about the document, and he agrees to meet Hartmann and collect it.
