Plot summary
In 1929 New York, Nanette Carter studies singing and dancing with her friends Jimmy Smith, a composer, and Tommy Trainor, a dancer. The producer Larry Blair, her on-and-off boyfriend, wants her to put $25,000 into a Broadway show that would give the two men major roles, and she turns him down. Larry then brings them to her Westchester estate, saying Jimmy's sister needs an operation; Nanette agrees to back the show. When her uncle Max Bloomhaus, who keeps her fortune, refuses the money, she bets him $25,000 that she can answer no to every question for 48 hours.
