Emmett Lynn

Biography

Emmett Lynn was an American stage and screen actor. Born in Muscatine, Iowa, he became a song plugger in Denver and performed in a children's revue; Gus Edwards cast him in School Days. In vaudeville he was an eccentric character comedian, and he later ran touring companies, including the Emmett Lynn Players, where he was the star comedian. Those troupes prospered in the 1920s and early 1930s, and by 1935 he was one comedian in the traveling musical revue The Passing Show. Lynn began film work for Biograph Studios in 1913 and appeared in more than 140 movies between 1940 and 1956. From 1949 until his death he also worked in television, often in westerns, including nine episodes of The Lone Ranger. He acted on Broadway in Gasoline Gypsies in 1931. Late in his career he was cast as Uncle Birdie in The Night of the Hunter, but director Charles Laughton replaced him with James Gleason during production.
