Biography

Allan Lane was an American actor who started in films at the end of the 1920s and became a star of cowboy B-movies, appearing in more than 125 films and television shows over a career that ran from 1929 to 1966. Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he had worked as a photographer, model and stage actor before his first screen part at Fox, a romantic lead in Not Quite Decent (1929). After his Fox and Warner Bros. years foundered, he returned in 1936 in supporting roles, among them Stowaway (1936), and later took the lead in The Duke Comes Back (1937). He played a Mountie sergeant in serials including King of the Royal Mounted (1940), was best known for Red Ryder, and provided the voice of the horse on Mister Ed from 1961 to 1966 without screen credit.

Lane provided the voice of the talking horse on Mister Ed from 1961 to 1966, but he was never credited on-screen for the role.

For Fox, Lane's first screen part was a romantic lead in Not Quite Decent, a 1929 release. June Collyer played opposite him, and the film is now lost.
