Plot summary
Red Ryder works as a stagecoach driver, and among his passengers is Dickie, a boy recently orphaned who makes the journey alone. Red puts the child aboard the inaugural run of the line from Elkhorn to Denver, Colorado, where the boy is to meet an aunt he has never seen. Sharing the coach is the Land Commissioner, bound for the city to report on the dishonest dealings of Big Bill Lambert, the local boss. Lambert's ownership of the new Denver line gives him a hold on communications, since no telegraph yet links the town with Denver, and he is determined that the Commissioner will not arrive.
