Black Market Babies (1945) on Netflix

Plot summary

A private maternity home is the front for a racket run by Eddie Condon, a small-time racketeer. He joins with a doctor to open it, and expectant mothers there are cared for at no charge, on the condition that each woman signs away all rights to her newborn. The home then offers the babies to couples who want to adopt, and those couples make a substantial contribution toward the home's expenses. The doctor, an alcoholic, delivers the babies at the home, and Condon handles the business. The arrangement stays just inside the law, and the money from the couples comes in steadily.
