Plot summary
The end of Prohibition is months away, so Chicago bootlegger Bugs Ahearn decides to give up the racket. He reads books and buys art, then moves to Santa Barbara, hoping to mix with the local upper crust. He rents a house from Ruth Wayburn, who is short of money, and takes her on as his social secretary. Bugs joins a polo team, playing badly, and the team accepts him because he pays. He meets Polly Cass and falls in love with her.
