Biography

Shirley Grey was an American actress whose screen career covered more than forty films from 1930 to 1935. Born in Naugatuck, Connecticut, she first performed with the Poli Players and then in stock companies in New Orleans, Jacksonville, San Francisco and Nova Scotia; she later led her own troupe, which she called the Shirley Grey Players, in the late 1920s. She took the lead in a production of the comedy-drama Chicago at Oakland's Fulton Theater in 1931. A talent scout for Samuel Goldwyn saw her in an Oakland stock production and arranged a screen test, leading to a contract with Goldwyn. Most of her film work was in the Pre-Code period, where she took notable supporting roles in The Life of Jimmy Dolan and The Little Giant, both released in 1933. She died in 1981.
