Arthur Hoyt

Biography

Arthur Hoyt was an American film character actor whose 34-year career covered more than 275 films, about a third silent. Born in Georgetown, Colorado, he began on Broadway in 1905 in The Prince Consort, appeared in The Devil, and last acted there in The Great Name in 1911. After the 1914 short The Scrub Lady, his film career took hold with The Heart of a Show Girl in 1916. He had large silent roles in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) and The Lost World (1925), directed Station Content and High Stakes in 1918, and ended his silent period with The Rush Hour in 1928. In talkies he often played henpecked husbands or downtrodden office workers, sometimes uncredited, and in Frank Capra's It Happened One Night (1934) he bothered Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable as a motor-court manager. In the 1940s he worked in Preston Sturges' unofficial stock company. He retired at 70 and died in 1953.

Behind the camera
Besides acting, Hoyt directed two silent features in 1918, Station Content starring Gloria Swanson and High Stakes, and served as casting director on Her American Husband.
A first
Hoyt's first sound film was the 1928 musical My Man starring Fanny Brice, and his workload did not slow in the sound era.
