John Ruddock
Biography
John Ruddock was a British actor born in Peru who worked in film, television and theater. Born in Lima in 1897, he studied in the 1920s at the Royal College of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He worked in repertory through the 1930s and performed at Stratford with the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre company. He spent the Second World War with the Entertainments National Service Association. After the war he returned to the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing John of Gaunt in Richard II and taking the part of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. Through the 1940s and 1950s he took notable character parts in MGM period films and appeared often on BBC radio and television, including A Christmas Carol, Dixon of Dock Green and The Avengers; in 1977 he acted in the post-apocalyptic series Survivors. He later coached drama at the Guildford School of Acting and died in 1981.
