Robert Beatty
Biography
Robert Beatty was a Canadian actor whose film, television and radio work was mostly based in Britain. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he earned a degree at the University of Toronto and went to London in 1936 to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where his English stage debut took place, and in 1939 he took a West End role in N.C. Hunter's comedy Grouse in June. He appeared in two war propaganda films in 1942, One of Our Aircraft Is Missing and 49th Parallel, and his film credits included Odd Man Out (1947), Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Where Eagles Dare (1968) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). On television he hosted Saturday Night Out, a BBC program, and played Detective Inspector Mike Maguire in Dial 999; for radio he sent Blitz reports to North America and played the detective Philip Odell from 1947 to 1961. He died in 1992.
