Biography

Robert Newton was an English actor who began on the stage in the 1920s and became a popular British film star. Born in Dorset and raised in Cornwall, he first acted at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1921 and later played Horatio to Laurence Olivier's Hamlet at the Old Vic in 1939. After serving in the Royal Navy during World War II, he broke through on screen with the lead in This Happy Breed (1944) and a role in Henry V (1944), and was among the most popular British film stars of 1944. He was best known for his portrayal of Long John Silver in Treasure Island (1950), a role he repeated in Long John Silver (1954) and a television series, and for playing Blackbeard in Blackbeard, the Pirate (1952). Other notable films included Jamaica Inn (1939), Odd Man Out (1947), Oliver Twist (1948), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1956). He died in 1956.
