Biography

Maureen Delany was an Irish actress and singer who worked mostly in the British theater and also appeared on screen. Born in Kilkenny and educated in Galway, she had a fine singing voice and first aimed at opera before Lennox Robinson admitted her to the Abbey Theatre School. Her stage debut came in 1914 in Edward McNulty's comedy The Lord Mayor, and she soon made her name as a comic actress and singer. Among her signature roles were Maisie Madigan in O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock, Bessie Burgess in his The Plough and the Stars, and Synge's Playboy of the Western World gave her the Widow Quin. She also acted at the Abbey in plays by Teresa Deevy, among them Temporal Powers in 1932 and 1937, A Disciple in 1931, and Katie Roche in 1937, which traveled to Broadway. A Tony Award nomination came her way in 1959 for God and Kate Murphy.
