David McCallum
Biography
David McCallum was a Scottish actor and musician who began his career doing boy voices for BBC Radio and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Early film roles in A Night to Remember (1958) and Violent Playground (1958) were followed by parts in Billy Budd and Freud: The Secret Passion (1962). He gained wide recognition in the 1960s as the Russian agent Illya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a role that earned him two Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. His films included The Great Escape (1963) and The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), in which he played Judas Iscariot. On television he appeared in Colditz and Sapphire & Steel, and from 2003 he played the chief medical examiner Donald Mallard, known as Ducky, in NCIS for 20 seasons. A multi-instrumentalist, he also recorded instrumental pop albums.

McCallum's instrumental track "The Edge" was sampled by Dr. Dre for the intro and riff of "The Next Episode", and it later appeared on the soundtracks of the video game Grand Theft Auto IV and the film Baby Driver.
Getting ready for a role
To play medical examiner Mallard on NCIS, McCallum became an expert in forensics, even attending medical examiner conventions. Donald P. Bellisario said his knowledge grew so vast that he was considering him as a technical adviser.

McCallum attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1949 to 1951. Joan Collins was a classmate of his there.
