John Meillon
Biography
John Meillon was an Australian character actor who moved easily between drama and comedy. Born in Sydney, he began performing as a child, making his radio debut at eleven in the ABC's Bush Christmas and taking his first stage role in 1946. He turned professional in 1948 with The Winslow Boy and spent the early 1950s with the John Alden Shakespeare Company. His first film part came in On the Beach (1959), and work in Britain followed before he returned to Australia in 1964. He became a fixture of Australian New Wave cinema in They're a Weird Mob (1966), Wake in Fright (1971), Walkabout (1971) and The Cars That Ate Paris (1974), and won an AACTA Award for The Fourth Wish (1976). He was best known as Walter Reilly in Crocodile Dundee (1986) and Crocodile Dundee II (1988), and also voiced Victoria Bitter advertisements. He was appointed an OBE in 1979 and died in 1989.
