Plot summary

A jewelry store robbery sends detectives Roger Mortis and Doug Bigelow after gunmen who absorb a hail of police bullets and keep firing; their captain assigns them the investigation. A coroner friend, Rebecca Smythers, tells them the bodies have autopsy scars and that she performed the autopsies herself, and a preservative compound in the corpses leads the partners to a chemical company. There Randi James, its head of public relations, shows them around. Doug slips into a back room and finds a reanimated corpse hooked to a machine; Roger, coming to help, is knocked into a decompression chamber. Rebecca and Doug bring Roger back with the same machine, though his heart does not beat and his skin is cold. He has about twelve hours to find whoever killed him and solve the robbery case.
