Plot summary
A satellite launched from a Space Shuttle collides with an unidentified object, killing an astronaut in the launch bay. The astronauts aboard, Bancroft and Price, see the crash. Back on Earth they are stonewalled when they ask about it. The damaged craft lands in the Arizona desert and is installed at Wolf Air Force Base in Texas, in a hangar where Harry Forbes heads the scientists studying it. With a presidential election near, officials want the event kept secret, and the Air Force blames Bancroft and Price for their colleague's death and for the satellite's loss. The telemetry tapes that would clear them have been wiped, so the pair turn to a friend at a remote tracking station to find proof of what they saw.

- The film's story draws on the Roswell incident and contemporary rumors about Area 51. Its title likely comes from hoaxer Robert Spencer Carr, who claimed in 1974 that Hangar 18 held bodies from the 1948 Aztec UFO hoax.
- Hangar 18 was one of the very few American films shown theatrically in the Soviet Union, and it also aired on the Soviet channel Programme One in 1982. With few science fiction and action films available there, it became popular with Soviet youth.
- Director James L. Conway returned to the same subject in "Little Green Men", a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode whose characters travel back to 1947 and crash near Roswell. The building where their ship is stored is designated Hangar 18.
- Hangar 18 was featured in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 in 1989, when the show was still a local program.
