Biography

Albert Popwell was an American actor who began as a professional dancer and made his stage debut on Broadway at 16 in The Pirate with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, later appearing in Mister Wonderful and Golden Boy. Born in New York City, he moved to Los Angeles in 1967, where Carl Reiner helped open doors and Leslie Stevens gave him an early television role in Search. He became best known for his work opposite Clint Eastwood: after playing a blade-wielding hippie in Coogan's Bluff (1968) he joined Eastwood's Malpaso company and went on to take a different part in four Dirty Harry films, among them the wounded bank robber of Dirty Harry (1971), a murderous pimp in Magnum Force and Horace King in Sudden Impact (1983). He also appeared in Charley Varrick (1973) for director Don Siegel and was featured in many television series.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Popwell played the militant Big Ed Mustapha in The Enforcer (1976), a film he said he had not planned to be in. Director James Fargo replaced another actor in the part because he felt that actor lacked the proper feel for it.
