Plot summary
Earth's ozone layer is depleted, and an undersea laboratory is exploring new ways for people to live. Biologist Claire McDowell is examining an unknown specimen when psychic visions come to her. A relief crew is headed down in a submarine when a quake cuts communication with the surface. The sub goes silent, and a search submarine is sent to investigate. It finds the relief craft derelict, its hatch open and the crew gone, and then comes under attack from large creatures that resemble stingrays. One is driven off with an electrical discharge, but more of them overwhelm the search sub. Outside the lab, crew member Raymond Chadwick is working on repairs when he is attacked. Commander Stuart Dobler and the others find him at the moon pool, half out of the water.

- Future two-time Academy Award winner Janusz Kamiński shot second unit for about two weeks of the four-week schedule, and a crew member said his footage was "too good" and did not match the first unit, so he was pulled before shooting ended, though his work stayed in the film, uncredited.
- Roger Corman said he shelved the first draft script because he didn't like it, then brought it back about a year before the 1989 shoot with new ideas, noting the era's biggest underwater film was being made by his ex-assistants Gale Hurd and Jim Cameron.
- Double Oscar winner Robert Skotak, who worked on Aliens and Terminator 2, created the film's underwater visual effects with his brother Dennis, and said he took the low-budget job for the "four weeks paid work" and the people on their way up and down.
- Lords of the Deep is one of six movies featured in season 12 of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
