Plot summary
At the Sonderditch gold mine near Johannesburg, a tunnel collapse kills Frank Lemmer, the general manager. The collapse was no accident but the failed work of an international syndicate trying to move the price of gold, and it leaves Manfred Steyner, a member of the group, without his chief accomplice inside the mine. Steyner interviews Rod Slater, who runs the underground workings, about the vacant post. Slater also meets Steyner's wife Terry, who shows no interest in him, though Steyner arranges for the two to meet again, hoping Terry will persuade her grandfather Hurry Hirschfeld, the mine's owner, to endorse Slater. Slater takes the job, and his orders are to drill toward a huge underground reservoir.

- Tony Klinger, assistant to the producer, tried to get Steven Spielberg to direct Gold after being impressed by Duel, but star Roger Moore vetoed the choice on the basis of Spielberg's youth.
- Britain's ACTT film union put a black ban on Gold because its members were forbidden to work in South Africa; it suggested shooting in a Welsh mine instead, the filmmakers refused, saying Wales looked nothing like South Africa, and some members defied the ban.
- The film's source, South African author Wilbur Smith's 1970 novel Gold Mine, drew on a real-life flooding of a gold mine near Johannesburg in 1968, and Smith researched the book by working in a gold mine for a few weeks.
- Actor Bradford Dillman recalled that Susannah York, a militant liberal, used every publicity opportunity to deplore the conditions of the Black miners, despite the producers' pleas to cool it.
- Roger Moore said they had to drop down two miles, which was horrendous; he started out enthusiastic about the mine but after ten days down there found it very claustrophobic.
