Plot summary
Myles Clarkson once hoped to play piano in concert halls; now he writes about music, and he is thrilled to interview Duncan Ely, one of the world's great virtuosos. Duncan barely tolerates the meeting until he notices Myles' hands, which look made for the keyboard. After that Duncan and his adult daughter, Roxanne, keep drawing Myles and his wife, Paula, into their company. Duncan is dying of leukemia. Paula dislikes him and distrusts Roxanne, while Myles feels honored to be counted a friend. Duncan wants Myles' company constantly, and Paula begins to question the older man's intentions.
