Plot summary
A species of insect that can start fires by rubbing its legs together is released when an earthquake strikes a small town. The insect has never been catalogued. The blazes it starts cause destruction, and the thin air at the surface kills most of the bugs. Professor James Parmiter keeps one survivor alive in a pressure chamber and studies the insect.

- Producer William Castle took out a million-dollar life insurance policy on the film's insect star, a cockroach named Hercules, as a promotional gimmick typical of his style.
- William Castle pitched theater seats rigged with mechanisms to make patrons feel crawling insects on their legs, as he had for The Tingler, but Paramount Pictures was skeptical and installed it in only a few theaters.
- The interior set for Professor Parmiter's house was repurposed from the "Brady home" set of the sitcom The Brady Bunch, which had been canceled before Bug began shooting.
- The film's cockroach models were designed by Karoly Fogassy, a technical illustrator at the University of California, Riverside, and real cockroaches specially bred by a university entomologist were used on screen as well.
