Biography

Ben Whishaw is an English actor who began his career in the 2000s. Born in Clifton, Bedfordshire, he grew up there and in Langford. He played the title part in a 2004 staging of Hamlet at the Old Vic, earning favorable reviews and an Olivier Award nomination. Television work followed in Nathan Barley, Criminal Justice, and The Hour, along with early screen roles in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, I'm Not There, Brideshead Revisited, and Bright Star. In 2012 he won a British Academy Television Award for playing Richard II and first appeared as Q in Skyfall, a role he reprised in Spectre and No Time to Die. He has voiced Paddington Bear since Paddington (2014). His other films include Cloud Atlas, Suffragette, The Danish Girl, and Mary Poppins Returns. For A Very English Scandal he won a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and an Emmy, and he has starred in This Is Going to Hurt and Black Doves.

  1. Beyond film

    Whishaw shared the lead in Trevor Nunn's 2004 Old Vic Hamlet with Al Weaver, an unusual arrangement Nunn reportedly made because the two actors were so young, to ease the pressure on each. Whishaw played every night except Mondays and matinees.

  2. A first

    In the 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, Whishaw took the part of Q. His Q was younger than earlier ones: Peter Burton and Desmond Llewelyn were in their forties when cast, and Llewelyn and John Cleese went on playing Q into their eighties and sixties.

  3. Early training

    Whishaw trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2003, and before that performed with the Bancroft Players Youth Theatre at Hitchin's Queen Mother Theatre.

  4. Beyond film

    Whishaw devised and performed in a physical theater adaptation of Primo Levi's If This Is a Man with Big Spirit Youth Theatre, taking it to the 1995 Edinburgh Festival where it drew five-star reviews.

  5. Behind the camera

    Whishaw is credited as an executive producer on This Is Going to Hurt, the BBC and AMC medical drama in which he also stars, adapted from comedian Adam Kay's memoir of his time as a junior NHS doctor in 2006.
