Plot summary
Lance Corporal Dell passes his collection of photographs around the platoon, and Private Billy MacFarlane is sure one of the women in them worked at his Post Office. The men of Sergeant Winter's platoon are in a frontline trench in the summer of 1916, waiting for the offensive everyone knows is coming. Lieutenant Harte brings Winter the orders: the platoon goes over in the third wave, carrying supplies. A colonel arrives to tell them the bombardment has already finished the Germans off and to ask for a cheer. Between stand-tos and night sentry duty, Billy and his brother Eddie wait out the remaining hours in the trench.
