Plot summary
Alice Woodard is a senior plant breeder at a corporation that develops new flower species, and she gives more of herself to the work than to her teenage son Joe. Her colleague Bella cannot create a plant hardy enough to survive weeks of neglect, while Alice and her team have a crimson variety whose special chemical properties make its owner happy, provided it is kept at the right temperature, fed and spoken to regularly. Alice calls the plants Little Joe after her son and carries one out of the lab against company policy as a gift for him. Chris, a coworker in the lab, works beside her.
