Plot summary
Andy Brewster trained as an organic chemist at UCLA and has put his savings into ScieoClean, a cleaning product he says is safe for people and for the environment. He wants a major retailer to carry it, and buyers keep turning him down. Before setting off on a cross-country sales drive, he stops in New Jersey to see his mother, Joyce, and tells her a K-Mart meeting went better than it did. Joyce, widowed when Andy was a boy, turns the talk to his single life. She also tells him he was named for Andrew Margolis, a man she loved in Florida and hoped would object to her marrying Andy's father. Andy looks the name up and learns the man lives in San Francisco. He invites Joyce on the drive.
