Plot summary
Pete Robbins drives a cab in Brooklyn, and his wife Henrietta looks after the household money, picking up part-time work where she can, telephone sales among it. Pete's sister-in-law Helen, married to his brother Fred, enjoys pointing out that an early marriage cut short Pete's college education and that she and Fred are comfortably off. Nick Kasabian, the dispatcher, passes Pete word of a pork belly futures deal that should pay out within a week. The stake is $3,000, and the Robbinses are $2,700.38 short. When legal borrowing fails, Henrietta takes the money from a loan shark at 20 percent interest a week and tells Pete it came from somewhere else. She expects the futures to cover the debt many times over.
